Volunteer Opportunities at the Carnegie
Volunteers are an integral part of the Carnegie Visual Arts Center. There are two volunteer groups, The Carnegie Volunteer Club and the Junior Volunteer Guild. Each provides specific assistance in operating Decatur’s first art museum and education center. Because of their tireless efforts, the Carnegie Visual Arts Center is able to provide a quality experience for all her visitors whether they are viewing a current exhibit or participating in one of the educational opportunities offered in the Daikin America Education Center. Regular meetings are held to keep volunteers informed of new activities and exhibits.
Members of the Carnegie Volunteer Club may serve in several capacities:
Docents - Trained volunteers who educate visitors about the current exhibit in the Museum as well as the history and architecture of the building.
Administrative - These volunteers help with clerical tasks such as answering telephones, assisting guests in the gift shop, working on direct mailings, filing, pricing items in gift shop and other administrative tasks. Many volunteers do “double duty” by helping out with administrative tasks while carrying out the duties of a docent.
Educational - These volunteers assist the Education Director in the preparation, management and promotion of educational programs in the Daikin America Education Center.
Landscape & Beautification - Assist in seasonal plantings, container gardening and interior arrangements.
Special Events - These volunteers work on specific events from receptions to hanging an exhibit. The Museum hosts as many as six artist receptions each year, hold regular fundraising events and participate in area festivals. These activities provide a wide variety of volunteer opportunities from clerical to creative roles.
Volunteers are needed on an almost daily basis in order to cover the Museum during the regular hours of operation, Tuesday through Saturday 10 AM to 5 PM. Special Events volunteers are needed at various times throughout the year depending on the specific event.
The Junior Volunteer Guild is open to teenagers ages 13 to 18. These young people work in similar capacities as their adult counterparts. In addition, the Junior Volunteer Guild will meet regularly for social and educational opportunities. The Junior Volunteer Guild has taken as their project the maintenance of the Japanese Rock Garden on the Southeast side of the Carnegie Visual Arts Center.
