Rejuvenated Decatur Arts Council Offers Services to Support Arts in our Community

On November 29, 2007, Decatur Arts Council Vice President Scott Lancaster addressed our club with an update on the organization’s past, present and future. Scott explained that the Decatur Arts Council is an umbrella organization serving our community’s many arts organizations and has as its mission “the coordination, promotion, and development of educational and cultural activities in the City of Decatur, Alabama and surrounding area.”

Scott reminded us that, since the Arts Council’s founding in 1970, it has made significant contributions to our community including:

  • Providing scholarships to art students;
  • Providing Marquee programs for Princess Theatre events;
  • Providing equipment and advertising support for area arts organizations;
  • Establishing the Bravo Awards for significant contributors to the arts;
  • And leading the development of the Carnegie Visual Arts Center.

Scott explained that the Council has recently been involved with the following:

  • Hot Chocolate Giveaway at the 2006 Christmas Parade;
  • Set Painting for the Decatur Civic Chorus production of The Music Man;
  • Volunteer work at the Carnegie’s Annual Sidewalk Sale;
  • Volunteer work at the 2007 Downtown Halloween Hoot;
  • And the painting of a mural for the F.A.C.E.S. organization.

Scott concluded by giving a few details about the Council’s current community Mural Project - an effort to beautify downtown and other areas of the city by adding artistic murals around town. The Council is currently working on design concepts and testing materials for the murals. The organization plans to have matters finalized and murals started by May of 2008.

In the future, the Decatur Arts Council will continue to create and volunteer for projects that promote, develop and support our arts community in Decatur. Scott said the Council is open to any and all requests and invited members to contact the council when assistance is needed.
